Contrary to what many people think, a drainage system does not have an eternal life span; most drains last around 30 years. Sooner or later, it will be necessary to repair or install a new drain. At Fondation & Fissure St-Amant, our experts will be able to answer your questions and propose effective solutions at unbeatable prices.
Before starting the work, it is important to determine whether the installation or repair will be done from the outside or the inside. Generally, the work is done from the outside of the building, but in some situations, it can be done from the inside. This is the case when dealing with party or common walls, for example.
The first step in installing a drainage system is to excavate the perimeter from the foundation to the footing. The base is then levelled so that the drain can be placed as close as possible to the foundation, following a slight negative slope towards its pour point. At this stage, it is strongly recommended to also waterproof the foundation and thus minimize any chance of future water infiltration.
Once the excavation is complete, a geotextile membrane is extended to the bottom of the trench to limit contamination between the soil and the drainage system. The French drain is installed and connected to the drainage system, i.e. the rainwater, the basin or the pit.
Then, crushed stone is placed on the drain to allow optimal water drainage. A second geotextile membrane is also applied to the gravel layer, once again avoiding future soil contamination.
The last step is to backfill the trench with compacted soil or gravel, depending on the circumstances.
